The Batman Release Date and Where You Can Watch It
The Batman is headed to theaters on March 4, 2022. It was initially set to open this year, but delays due to COVID-19 changed that.
The 2022 release date will also keep the film from being part of Warner Bros.’s current method of simultaneously releasing all their 2021 titles in theaters and on HBO Max on the same day. That means The Batman will be exclusive to theaters.
What is The Batman?
Don’t you mean “Who is The Batman?” The Batman is yet another movie about Batman, and while it seems kind of silly to reboot this character yet again, Warner Bros. knows Batman is a big moneymaker.
And to be fair, the movie does look pretty damn cool. At one point, The Batman was going to be part of the DCEU, with Ben Affleck both directing and starring in the project, as well as working on the script.
Eventually, Affleck stepped back from directing – and then left the project altogether. It will now be a standalone film completely separate from the DCEU continuity, similar to 2019’s Joker.
While the film is introducing us to a new Batman, it won’t be an origin story like Batman Begins. Instead, the film is set in the second year of Batman’s crimefighting mission.
He’s been around in Gotham for a year now, and while people in Gotham are aware of him, he’s still a bit of a mystery. As director Matt Reeves explained during DC fandom,
this film drops us into Batman’s world as he’s taking part in a “criminological experiment to figure out how to change Gotham.”
Where will The Batman be set?
It’s fair to say that The Batman will be likely mostly be set in Gotham, but where specifically? According to Variety, “a handful of scenes” will be filmed in Arkham Asylum, the high-security prison known to comic book fans for housing super-criminals. The film won’t be fully set in Arkham but the hospital will be featured in some capacity.
This comes after it was theorized by fans that writer/director Matt Reeves may be partially drawing inspiration from Rocksteady’s popular Batman: Arkham Asylum video game that saw Batman locked in the psychotic psychiatric institution along with many of his greatest foes.
“It’s very practical, the idea is that [Batman] made it himself,” Reeves said at DC FanDome in August 2020. “It needs to look like he can move, but it’s still evolving. He’s in Year Two of being Batman.”
“It’s early and Batman’s still a vigilante,” the director continued. “[Gotham’s people] wonder, ‘That guy sounds a little dangerous.’ He’s not yet the symbol of hope. He’s still a growing legend. People wonder whether he exists. It’s one of the things he will confront in the story.”
The Batman story: what is the plot about?
The Batman is set during the second year of Bruce Wayne’s Batman career (per The Wrap). That should bypass the need to see another Batman origin movie, which Christopher Nolan’s films covered definitively in Batman Begins.
Here’s the movie’s official synopsis, by way of Warner Bros’ UK 2022 preview listing: “Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman, striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City.
With only a few trusted allies – Alfred Pennyworth, Lt. James Gordon – amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.
“When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle aka Catwoman, Oswald Cobblepot aka the Penguin, Carmine Falcone, and Edward Nashton aka the Riddler.
As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.”
The presence of Catwoman, Penguin, and the Riddler in this film suggests we’re already fairly deep into DC Comics lore, with Paul Dano’s Riddler seemingly the main antagonist making life difficult for Wayne and his shadowy alter-ego.
